Lessons Learned

▪ While the artist must respect the writer’s vision, the writer must accept what the artist can complete by deadline.

▪ Reconsider bringing a story that you've long been aching to tell. In 8 hours, it may not satisfy that burning need.

▪ If you do your text by computer, running spellcheck before you insert the text instead of after will make editing easier.

▪ Make sure everyone works with heavy bond paper and dark enough pencils so their art can scan more easily.

▪ Clarify your rules.

▪ The simplest art can accompany the most complex story.

▪ A splash page is a great way to up your page count.

▪ Stress that what’s most in the spirit of the project is to complete 8 imperfect pages in a single work shift rather than get polished pages carefully drawn and finely inked.

▪ And if your faculty advisor wants to make a mock comic ad about a mongoose no one else can see, you let him.

Our editor at the end of a day well spent.
